KTM unveiled its second-generation FREERIDE E-XC model year 2018 at the Red Bull Hangar-7 in Salzburg, Austria and presented its future plan for the e-mobility segment.

The powerful and agile KTM FREERIDE E-XC is now even better. Powered by a state-of-the-art electric motor with a peak of 18 kW fitted into a re-designed composite frame that provides even better stability, this e-machine now benefits from a 50 % capacity increase in its new KTM PowerPack, which offers up to one and a half hours of riding time with just one battery charge. The new KTM FREERIDE E-XC now also utilizes energy recuperation when coasting or braking for an additional range boost, and the battery has a quick charging time, while also providing 70 % of its initial capacity after 700 charge cycles. In addition, this lightweight bike boasts a new WP Xplor 43 upside-down fork system with enhanced sensitivity, and a new WP PDS Xplor shock absorber with improved progression and adjustment options.

This latest e-powered machine is part of KTM’s long-term commitment to e-mobility, which began over 10 years ago in KTM’s research and development department in Mattighofen, Austria. The Austrian brand plans a range of machines for the future including e-mini, and an e-scooter. The vision is clear, and by 2025 KTM will increase emphasis on machines from 250 watt to 11kWh due to market suitability and efficiency.

A revolutionary new brushless permanent magnet synchronous electric motor delivers 18 kW (24,5 hp) of peak power with 42 Nm of torque, placing it in competitive range of similar sized combustion engine driven motorcycles.
The high powered Engine Control Unit (ECU) is the FREERIDE E engine’s “brain”. A water cooled ECU ensures instant yet usable power delivery in all riding conditions. Radiators ensure the electric motor casings and ECU are kept cool, ensuring optimal performance for your entire ride.

The new KTM FREERIDE E-XC features a new KTM PowerPack with increased capacity. Rated at 3.9 kWh, the new battery provides 50 % more capacity than the previous version’s 2.6 kWh, which makes it capable of powering the electric bike for up to 1.5 hours of riding fun, depending on the riding style and terrain. Just flip up the seat and loosen four bolts to swap out a depleted ‘Power Pack’ with a charged unit.

The chassis of the KTM FREERIDE E-XC was developed specifically to meet the demands of an electric offroad motorcycle. KTM has assembled a package of its most innovative solutions, including a steel-aluminum composite frame and a subframe made of high-strength polyamide. The KTM FREERIDE E-XC thus guarantees playful handling, with the peace of mind that comes with a low seat height, in addition to low weight, a strong frame, strong brakes and first-rate suspension components with long travel.

The new KTM FREERIDE E-XC uses the brand new WP XPlor 43 fork, a set of 43 mm upside-down fork legs with 250 mm of travel. With outstanding response and damping characteristics, the new WP XPlor 43 has an even more sensitive feel and enhanced protection against bottoming out.

Lightweight wheels with high-end anodised aluminium Giant rims are fitted to CNC machined hubs with lightweight aluminium spoke nipples. These ultra-light wheels are hard to beat in terms of weight and still guarantee the best stability and safety. The FREERIDE E’s MAXXIS tyres offer a traction-enhancing mixture of softness and high-quality for excellent grip.

The bolt-on subframe is fabricated from high-strength polymer. Featuring exceptional rigidity, it makes a significant contribution towards keeping the overall vehicle weight down. The integrated grip handle is recessed and well protected from mud and dirt thrown up by the rear wheel.

The multifunctional display between the steering head and seat allows the rider to select one of three different power delivery modes. In addition, a chain of LEDs, colored green to red, provides a visual indication of the charge remaining in the KTM PowerPack, with the red LED starting to flash and the bike automatically entering “limp home mode“ as soon as the charge drops below 10 %. In addition, error codes are indicated by the red LED flashing in different frequencies.

The latest Formula brake system features a radial 4-piston front caliper on a 260 mm Wave brake disc as well as a 2-piston rear caliper on a matching 230 mm rear Wave brake disc.

Lightweight, wide cast footpegs provide safe contact on the new KTM FREERIDE E-XC. The footpegs feature eccentric brackets that can be rotated by 180 degrees for a position offset 8 mm to the rear. This seemingly minute adjustment serves to shift the balance to provide handling either towards increased traction (rear) or easier cornering, respectively, as required.

The FREERIDE E-XC features lights, indicators, mirrors, an ignition lock and steering lock – making it practical for road registration. With a power output of 9 kW and weight of 111 kg the FREERIDE E-XC meets A1 beginner driver’s license requirements.
